Easter

The dogs and I have just shared some very, slow-cooked lamb with rosemary and sage. Not bad.

For some years, I have ruminated over the right thing to say when passing someone on a dog-walk.

'Hello' is not right. It was invented as a greeting by, I think, the "Bell Telephone company" at the beginning of the last century. Prior to that, it was used as an expression of surprise as in 'hello, what do we have here?', or as an inquiry, such as when one hears a strange noise in the house and calls 'hello?'. I believe that language should evolve, but I confess that I like the older usage of the word 'hello'; and I refuse to use it in its new capacity.

'How do you do?' is too formal and anticipates longer acquaintance.

'Hi' is too casual, too modern, too American. Whereas a nod, accompanied by the word 'alright?' makes the recipient think he or she is about to be robbed.

'Good morning' or 'good afternoon' both necessitate a moment's thought in order to check which time of day it is - and by then your transient, intended correspondent is behind you.

Similarly, 'nice day' and such like commentaries require an assessment of the weather.

Do you know what someone said to me today? He was a plumpish, middle-aged fellow. He made no eye-contact and hardly acknowledged me. But, as he passed, he mumbled:

"What ho!"

What ho. How bloody perfect is that? It can be said cheerily, or sullenly. It requires no thought, no analysis of time or times. It is meaningless, yet it entirely satisfies the social imperatives. Polite and self-sufficent, it demands no response. It's eccentricity facilitates potential dialogue with the open-minded, but armours the user against the small. I like it.

I shall endeavour to use it in future.

The dogs feel guilty for having eaten lamb.

Willow, Tracy!?!? Is Stephen aware of your bias? Anya was always my favourite.

What I tend to say when passing a fellow dog-walker is:

"If your dog comes near me - I am going to kick it in the head."

"And then I will sue your ass".

That works for me Phil.

Are you a good boxer, Mr P? Were you to kick either of my dogs in the head, you would need to be very good indeed.

What would your views be on the current tendency to use 'hay' in place of 'hey' I wonder....

trash said...

Personally Drusilla never held any appeal but by the end were we all not just a little in love with Spike?

One wonders what type of psychotic episode that bromeliad cranium fella must be having if he would greet fellow dog walkers with a) that statement and b) an empty space at the end of the lead?

Philip Sinclair said...

I didn't know there was such a tendency Katie. Obviously, for me, it's up there with the invasion of Iraq.

Bromeliad! Wow, try saying that when ordering a Hawaiian pizza.

I stick to a smile and a nod, that way I remain outwardly friendly and avoid answering the inevitable "What kind of accent is that you have?".
It helps I have no dog, just passerbys (bies?).

I'm with mot par mot. Smile and nod. If somebody said "what ho!" to me I'd probably cross the street/field to avoid them in the future.

If our dogs ate lamb, they wouldn't be feeling guilty, they'd be plotting a plan to get more.

Philipe - that was a very good response - Mr P is impressed.

Mr P has never kicked a dog in the head - ever; but P is a bit of a card.

Don't cha-think?

Mr Pineapples.....on one of his rants again....

The bromeliad fella, like all misbehaving small children, should simply be ignnored until his behaviour improves.

And that Riley? He was a wimpy wuss!

Oh yes Philip, 'Hay' is extensively used in email all over campus.

Really. electronic etiquette has jumped right out of the box these days, if you ask me.

I've always liked "How do?" in a Somerset accent!

Hey Phil...can P call you Pip?

Assuming He can: Hey Pip

How ya feeling old buddie?

Now dont listen to that two crofters bird: dont ignore The P...I might not play by the rules of Blog-land World - but The P has much to teach the world.

Amen

P has spoken.

I smile at people I walk past. I especially like to smile at old people, as they are the most likely to beam back. If someone were to say 'what-ho!' to me, I think I would smile very widely - it's a splendid expression.

It's lovely to 'see' you. Take care. x

I once saw a dog eat a pineapple whole x

Tracy x said...

ohhh - pineapple is good for a dog - it stops other dogs from eating its poo......

Mr Pineapples said...

Why is everyone being so "beastly" to Me?

Why?

What has P ever done to upset YOU?

No-one seems to like Me.

Mr Pineapples said...

Hey Kitty:

"What-Ho"

Now do you like Me?

Its nice to hear that someone else analyses sayings, figures of speech, cliches etc, rather than just following the crowds and saying them anyway. I do it all the time, and enjoy doing it too!! My favorite part of my psychology degree was the topic of cultural psychology which covers all that type of stuff. And i was the only student who enjoyed that module. Out of about 100 students on my course!
It most annoys me when people say "how r u?" and the response is "fine" (even when your life is anything but fine), i cant bear to ask someone how they are just for the sake of it.
Sometimes i think i just analyse stuff too much. But i think its just not in my nature to take things at face value or blindly follow others. I have to know everything about everything!

"What-ho!" to you too Mr Pineapples. I have never done anything other than smile at you.

"What Ho" is plainly ridiculous.

But before Kettles and Pots get embroiled in that whole race issue, I am prepared to admit that I cant think of a better solution.

Also -Pineapples -there is no 'e' at the end of Philip. Im not sure this blog is for you mate.

TD

Mr Pineapples said...

Hey Annonyarse

Philip is part French and prefers to have the "e" added. It adds a certain jer-ne-say-kwa.

Anyway - Mr P can go on any bleedin' blog He likes.

If there's only one 'n' at the beginning of 'anonymous' I suspect that there is only one 'n' at the beginning of 'annonyarse' (sic).

If you are friend of Phils all well and good. If you are not, as I suspect, your input seems to me to be unhelpful. Revisit the purpose of this blog before seeing fit to peddle your own insecurities any further. Please.

Mr Pineapples said...

insecurities? Mr P doesnt know the meaning of the word. As for peddling? Not sure what you mean?
